Moth Ball-Petroleum Oil smell in new garment

I bought two denim shirts (two sizes for fitting) online from a name brand store. After opening, both shirts smell very strong moth ball-petroleum oil smell. The smell is coming from the fabric, not the plastic bags they were shipped in. They are unwearable as they arrived. I have tried the following:
*hung shirt in the hot sun for several days-did not work
*soaked in straight white vinegar overnight, then washed as recommended and then hung it in the sun all day-did not work
Any suggestions? I am at a loss. Love the make-style of the shirt, but it is unwearable as it is :(
