I NEED HELP ON KEEPING MY BLACK JEANS FROM FADING TO GREY.

by Charlotte

I need help on keeping my black jeans from fading to grey. I bought new ones that are 97% cotton and 3% spandex. Is there anything to set the colors on the 1st wash? My friend says vinegar, I'm thinking salt, but do not know for sure or what mixture for a load.

Shelly's comments:

Good Morning Charlotte and thanks for the question!

Although I'm not a "laundry expert," your friend is correct about using vinegar, not salt. Here's a link for you to check into more information about setting color with vinegar:

Caring For Your Clothes With Vinegar

I use this solution to color-set fabric prior to making them into garments, pillows or other items.

Also, some detergents make a brand especially for dark clothing (just not sure of the brand, but you can check where you shop).

Remember to launder you clothes properly and check out the tips on these pages:

I NEED HELP ON...
by: Anonymous

Fading jeans is always a problem, isn't it? Well, I had this problem for many years but couldn't understand what to do. After a lot of research I found that a mild application of vinegar to the jeans would make sure there would be no fading. Additionally, the jeans has to be dried inside out so that the Sun would not wear down the color after many washes.

Drying the jeans is the most important part for prevention of fading. Turning the jeans inside out while drying in the shade ensures durability and usage time. Vinegar also works well.

Dying
by: Alex

The only way I could suggest you is to use the natural dyes available on the market. Try to dye it all by yourself and don't outsource it as they won't be working well. If you do this by yourself you can have the color be alive for much longer.

There is no particular trick for saving the color of the jeans. Better to just wash the pant as little as possible.

FADING TO GREY
by: Elizabeth Daniel

The best tip for keeping your colored jeans safe from fading is to keep it away from sunlight while drying. Do not spread it outside in the sun for drying. The second thing is, avoid bleach and detergents having more soda.

Fade
by: Javier

Here are some simple tips- Never put your jeans in the dryer. Turn the jeans inside out and wash. This could help you maintain the color from fading for a long period of time. Normally I wear my jeans at least 6-7 times before washing them.

Black Clothes and Cat Hair
by: Eliz

Has anyone found a great way to get cat hair off black clothes?

Shelly's Comments: Pet hair has been a problem since the beginning of time not matter what color your clothes! There are many things you can do to help:

  1. Brush the cat regularly. Using a shed blade can also help.
  2. Use lint rollers on your clothes or use wide tape (duct tape or electrical tape)
  3. Use dryer sheets in the dryer -- it will help remove the static cling and release more of the hair
  4. Some people have found that using Le Chien et Le Chat Detergent helpful. I believe this can be ordered through Amazon. Not sure I've heard of the results, however!

Hope you found these tips helpful!
